Modern Day Couponing

By: Gina Lee De Freitas

The use of technology has changed the way we do things and has made things easier, including saving money. For bargain hunters, the days of paper and scissors have nearly faded away as they tell us about the new apps and tools that can find the best deals more efficiently.

There are certain things the younger generations will never experience. Having to get up to change the channel. Answering a phone that’s attached to your wall. Using the World Book Encyclopedia to do your homework.

What else can we add to this list: clipping coupons.

Those little computers we pretend are only phones are becoming a faster, and perhaps easier, way to save money when shopping for wine, socks, cereal or something for the house. Apps like Ibotta, Shopkick, Ebates, and Honey give the user some way of saving money or getting rebates. But what do tech-savvy, money-saving moms and dads think of these new-fangled coupon clippers?

We asked, and this is what we heard:

Ebates: Cash back rebate app or website. Use the tool to find a store, promo code or deal.

  • “It’s awesome because it does it automatically.”
  • “Ebates has saved me like $30. Super easy. No receipt.”
  • “It’s best to look at before you go into the store.”
  • “I’d make it better by not having to pick each of the items I plan to buy but just have it find them automatically on my receipt.”

Honey: A web browser extension that automatically finds and applies the best coupon at checkout.

  • “I like that it scans the promo codes for you.”
  • “I was super skeptical at first…It really does find the best deals and gives you money back. And it’s effortless.”
  • “I have Honey. I think it’s saved me about a dollar.”

Ibotta: Another cash back app, but you must keep and take a photo of your receipt to get the rebate.

  • “It’s best to look at before you go into the store.”
  • “I’d make it better by not having to pick each of the items I plan to buy but just have it find them automatically on my receipt.”

Shopkick: Rather than cash rebates, shoppers earn gift cards for viewing offers, scanning select products or making purchases. Nobody on our unscientific panel of tech-savvy moms and dads are using Shopkick.

What’s our take? Internet shopping lends itself to bargain hunting, and these tools should make that easier. We’ll see how the cooperation between these apps and retailers grows over time, or if retailers look for ways to keep the entire customer experience in-house.

Happy shopping.
